Bloody LeachHere is an easy pattern to do that only requires 3 materials. This pattern works really well for trout. I used this fly to catch rainbow trout on the AuSable river by swinging it downstream.

Tail: black marabou

Flash: flashabou

Back Body: Black Moehair

Front Body:Red Moehair

I am off to go fishing! YAY! so i will not be able to post while i am gone. I will be sure to have a full report when i get back! I am going to be fishing Smith Mountain Lake for largemouth bass and crappie. Hope to hook some big bass on the fly! there are alot of docks there so it will most likely side arm casting big flies under the docks where all the big bass are!

A few days ago after seeing a concert and getting home at 11:30 pm i had to get ready to go fish the gunpowders trico hatch the next day. Getting up at 5:30 and heading off on our hour and a half drive to the Gunpowder River. Arriving at 7:45 ready to fish I just watched the stream looking for signs of the Hatch. There were no rises until about 8:15 when i finally found the right trico pattern I landed a small brown trout about 6″. Most of the Brown trout seemed to be in pods because of the extremely low water.

I was fishing a small flat. There was a fallen log under water that made a little riffle where some rainbows were stacked up. Landed a few rainbows there. The Trico hatch ended at about 11:30. Managed to land a big sucker on a BH Hairs Ear. Later in the day I was able to land a few fish on a Beetle Pattern. The fishing was ok but it was very tough because of the low water. It was essential to be stealthy and stay behind the fish. The fish were in pods and when you spooked one of the fish you spooked the whole pod.

Tricorythodes (Tricos)

tricoTricos often are one of the heavier hatches during the summer months.  I have seen trico hatches lasting from 9:30 until 12:00 where every brook trout in the stream was out feeding on them. If you have ever experienced a hatch such as this you would know that there are so many fish rising it is hard to pic which one to cast too! When the tricos are emerging it is fairly easy to catch fish (if you can see your fly) When i fish the emerging tricos i usually use a size 24 parachute pattern.  It gets slightly harder when the fish start to take the spinners because there are so many on the water the trout just start to porpoise when eating them. When that happens you need to select the fish to cast to and then time it so your fly goes over him when he rises. Because there are so many trico spinners in the water when the fish rises he usually gets a few Trico spinners!

I have trouble casting more that 120feet single handed with a 9ft 8wt. 2 weeks ago Steve Rajeff just broke his previous record of 236 that no one thought would be broken at the American casting championships in Toronto.
