Days On The Water in 2010: 10

Report: Got on the water around 1:00. Started out with a #16 Quill Gordan assuming there would be a small hatch of quill gordans. Managed a really small brownie that was like 3” on the Quill Gordan. Switched to a #14 Pheasant Tail emerger. Landed one really nice brownie about 8” on it. Not to much more action while I was heading upstream so I added a dropper to the fly with a BWO Nymph. Managed a few brown trout on that. Had one nice brownie take the dropper but did not get a hookset. Lost my last PT Emerger so I tied on a #18 Black Stonefly Dry because I have seen several stoneflies that day on the banks and trees. Added the BWO Nymph on the Stonefly. Decided to go back downstream and saw a really nice riffle and lost a nice brookie as he was coming to hand. Lost the dropper so I tied on a #18 Flash Back Pheasant Tail and landed a small brookie. Went further downstream to near the bridge where the highway crosses the stream but nothing there. Fished my way back up to where I started and tied on a #16 Parachute adams and had a few rises for it and landed one of them. Got up to posted water and had to turn back so I fished a #16 Mr. Rapidan on my way back down and managed one rise on it.

Where: Wilson Creek, VA

Date: 3.28.10

Conditions: Overcast Sky. Around 45 degrees. Rain Around 12oclock.

Water Conditions: clear.

Working Flies: #18 BH Pheasant Tail, #14 Caddis Pupa

Days On The Water in 2010: 8

Report: Got to Wilson creek around 10:30. Rigged up a dry and dropper rig with a #12 Adams and a flashback pheasant tail. Got a small bait fish of some sort on it. Then landed a really small brookie. Both had huge scar marks on them. They were near a tree that’s trunks are all in the water so I guess a huge brown lives there! Most of the stream is general brookie water. Mostly riffles. Majority of my fish were in the tails of pools (if you could find a pool!) and in seams between two riffles. Noting else much happening so I switched to a #18 emerging midge with no luck but a tree! Switched to a #14 Caddis pupa and got 3 more fish on it. Right before the rain came I switched to a little attractor pattern I came up with and landed 1 brookie. Once the rain started I was able to bring one other brookie to hand. All brookies that a landed were small dinks so not much happening! Had to climb a really gnarly hill to get back out. Next time I am throwing a rope in my backpack to help me get up that hill! Got out around 12:15 and headed home =(

Days On The Water in 2010: 7

Report:

Wilson Creek- At around 8:30 arrived at Wilson creek for some brookie fishing. It was a cold morning with frost on the ground so everything was going slow. No visible hatch. Fished the seams from the native brookies. Had one brookie take the flash back pheasant tail. The brookie was about 7” so a decient brookie. Missed another brookie a little upstream 2 times. Fished the creek for about a half an hour before getting ready for a float trip.

Jackson River- Arrived at the river around 1:20ish. Rigged up and were in the water by 1:50ish. After 15min. Fished a tandem nymph rig with a #18 Emerging black midge and a #14 prince nymph and a yarn indicator. Nailed one nice brown trout near some submerged rocks around 8ft. A nice 15” wild brown that pulled the drag on the reel a few times. Really nice stuff to hear! A little while down the river I stuck another fish on some submerged wood but he got off! Switched to a Gummy stone a pattern developed by a local guide. Got 2 rainbow on it near the bank. One 8” and a 12”. Pulled out a 6wt. with a full sinking rio multi tip and a prototype jointed streamer! Moved many fish with the fly. Just few fish hit it. Many nice follows with strikes but not to many hookups. Saw two 20” chase it but no takes. Finally got a 16” from chucking it to the bank. Chucked it the rest of the day with more follows but no hookups.

Conditions: Overcast with a occasional strong wind. Sun popped through clouds ever once in a while.65degrees.

Water Conditions: Slightly Stained. Warm

Working Flies: #6-10 Black Sparkle Woolly Bugger, #14 Green Caddis Pupa

Days On The Water in 2010: 6

Report: Had a few hours after school to fish. Got to bike over to a little stream to do some fishing that has recently been stocked. Fished around with a sparkle caddis larvae with no results. Saw a few fish that were easily spooked so I resorted to crawling on my knees and bow casting. After spooking a few more fish I tied on a mo hair leech with no results. Switched to a gummi bugger with still no looks. Went back upstream to a really shallow sad looking slow run. Saw 2 fish. Hooked one #14” rainbow on a #14 Green Caddis Pupa but spooked the other one during the fight. Went upstream to a deep pool with no luck on the caddis so I switched to a #8 Black Sparkle Woolly Bugger and the fish went crazy for it. Landed another but got off. A really great time fishing all in all!

will be fishing most of this weekend hopefully so more to come on the blogosphere!

So it felt amazing to finally break that pesky little skunk off my back! 4 trips i went on without a single fish or a take! Granted 3 of the 4 times i went to the gunpowder when the weather was crap and the water had crap in it.. and the 5th time i went bluegill fishing in the middle of winter?!?!?!?!?  So it really felt awesome to break the skunk of with not one fish but 12 fish not counting the ones i hooked and fought but got off were another dozen! These are some monster hard fighting fish! Visit the Rose River Farm website or Facebook page for more info 0n fishing this amazing water!

Where: Rose River Farms, Syria Va

Date: 2.14.2010

Conditions: Clear Sky w/ few clouds. 38degrees. 20mph WSW wind in morning. 3mph WSW wind in afternoon.

Water Conditions: Good Levels. Unknown cfs.

Working Flies: Stonefly Nymph #10-18, Prince Nymph #16, Pheasant Tail #16-#18, Red Butt Soft hackle, Rainbow Warrior #16-#18, CDC Stonefly #14-18

Days on the Water in 2010: 5

Report: No Skunk Achieved! Started around 10:00am to fish downstream of the parking area. Got out of car to throw on waders and got met by some freaking cold wind! As the Simms website says “sometimes the wind cuts like a ginsu knife” and boy was it cutting today! I Hoped for some stonefly hatches but with the wind it did not work out there were a few very sporadic rises through the day but nothing major… So I figured I would tie on a stonefly nymph of my own secret recipe. Arrived at the beat of water I would fish first. It was a slow riffle of about 4ft.  Stacked up fish in feeding lanes (oh boy!) most fish around 15”-18” including a 20” near the back of the riffle in a pool! The fish were feeding on nymphs on the bottom. Needed to get my stonefly to the bottom so it required upstream cast to allow enough time for nymph to get to the bottom. Caught 2 fish on the #14 stone. Switched to a #18 flashback pheasant tail. Fish seemed to like the pheasant tail best. Moved downstream to one of the last pools on the farm and saw multiple fish (in rose river farms terms this means 2 doz. Plus fish!) This fish were not interested in the pheasant tail so I switched up to a #16 prince nymph. Fished the nymph through a deep riffle on the side of a pool to allow the nymph time to get to the bottom where the fish were feeding. Got one strike and another hookup but did not land the fish. Went back to the first pool I fished and saw one rise so I switched to a CDC Stonefly and managed one beautiful rainbow with a heck of a rise! Went back upstream for lunch and by this time most of the wind had stopped and I fished a pool below the parking area. And hooked into a fish with the #14 stone. Got another take but I was slow on the hook set. Went back for my lunch cup of noodles and pretzels! Fished the Pool right next to the parking area with a fishyboy special streamer and had a few follows but the fish only would follow if it had lots of action and going slow. Did not get any others in the pool with the stone, pheasant tail, or prince nymph. Walked upstream and found an awesome deep slow riffle/pool with several fish (remember rrf terms!) and switched to a larger stonefly with some more weight on it to get it to the bottom of the riffle. Caught like 3 fish on numerous casts. Lost a few nice ones from the riffle and hooked a beautiful 17” that took a huge upstream run and put the evo 1.5 through its paces! Went upstream further and spotted several large fish but unable to catch them.

maybe a pic or two later once i get the camera back from the mums!

1.8.2010-Local DH

Where: Accotink Creek, VA Americana Ball Park

Date: 1/18/10

Conditions: 52 degrees J . 2mph NNW Wind. Clear Partly Cloudy Sky

Water Conditions: Running Slightly Muddy at 22 cfs

Flies: San Juan Worm, Egg, Kreelex, Mini Bugger

Days On The Water in 2010: 2

Report: Previous Day Accotink flowed at 400cfs from the rain. During the rain after Christmas Accotink had flowed at 2,000cfs and I suspect because of the hotlane project on the beltway washing so much junk downstream and really messing up the flows that the fish got washed out downstream. I talked to a friend who guides the area and they said to go upstream about the part the beltway crosses the river. I started fishing with a San Juan worm with an egg dropper. Fished a nice deep running pool with no success. Cut the dropper and fished with just the San Juan worm with no luck. Saw a large flat relatively still pool and switched to a mini bugger pattern that is really good on stocked trout. Still no success. Decided to leave because of no action so I switched to a kreelex to fish downstream with and had no luck. It was a great day to be on the water in this warm weather!

Where: Gunpowder River, MD. Masemore Road.

Date: 1/2/10

Conditions: cold. 25degrees. wind 20mph WNW Clear partly Cloudy Sky

Water Conditions: Clear and running at 210 cfs

Days On the Water in 2010: 1

Report: well i went fishing today! got to try out the new wading jacket! the temp. was about 20-25degrees and the wind was a @&#$*. so the wading jacket really helped out to cut the wind. Dropped my gloves in the water after 5 minutes of fishing. started off fishing a caddis larva with a zebra midge as a dropper. no takes on that after a few hours so i changed to a hares ear with a rainbow warrior dropper. Still nothing. even nothing in the bend pool. Did not see a single fish. Learned when your reel ices up and you fix it the drag will not work.

Last Saturday i headed up to the gunpowder again!!! It is such a cool fishery i is a little hard to fish because they are wild fish and are very smart but they are some of the most colorful brown trout you have ever seen! They have lots of blue on them!!!!

Anyways… I arrived at about 2:00pm and checked out what way happening in the fly shop and at the river and bought some more fly tying materials(you can never have enough!)  I went to fish the Masemore Road section where there is a nice long flat that holds some nice fish but are UBER hard to catch because they have so long to look at your fly…. I only got one taker early in the day on a size 16 caddis on 6x…. no other takers though! I went downstream to practice my Czech nymping a new tactic i am learning that is used often in competition fishing and all the European powers use it! I was fishing a little deep pool that was running fairly well! and hooked into one fish that seemed a decent size but got off(they all do lol). So it was nearing 5pm and the sun was going behind the mountains so i went back to fish the flat right in front of the parking lot to see if i could get any fish to rise! I had a few rises to my size 16 caddis but could not get solid hook sets. Then it seemed they were rising to some midges (possibly tricos but i think a little late for them) i tied on 7x with a griffis gnat with no takes so i switch back to the caddis seeing a few in the air. I really needed to go so i decided what the heck and shot a 60 ft. cast upstream and sure enough i got a rise and a solid hookset! now i am dealing with an 8inch fish with like 60 ft. of line out. I was pretty much dragging the fish while trying to pick up the line fast. I got him in and he was full of fall colors. Wish i got a photo but i did not…  sorry……

Happy Veterans Day
