Subsurface- Streamer with ice chennile and marabou. color combo has always worked very good

Articulated Hellgramite-got the idea from murrays hellgramite but i really did not like the tail on it. the tail was black herl and i thought it looked like a woolly bugger in the water. So i decided to use the body on 2 hooks and make it articulated.

This fly tying marathon is made to support project healing waters programs in the area.

The Event will be for 5 hours. It is free for you to attend. If you cant stay the whole time or don’t want to tie the whole time you don’t have to. There will be lunch provided. All the flies that are tied will be donated to project healing waters programs in the area. These flies will be used by the veterans for use during their fishing rehabilitation programs to catch fish!

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and veterans through fly fishing and fly tying education and outings. They teach veterans of wars how to fly cast, fly fish and tie flies. Since its inception, PHWFF has been helping disabled active duty personnel and veterans to overcome the obstacles associated with their military service-related disabilities. The relearning of the fine motor skills required in fly fishing and fly tying has proven to be particularly effective in the overall rehabilitation of the disabled.

If you are able to make this program or have any questions please contact me

Wray Sinclair at wcsinclair@msn.com with your name and how long you will be able to attend.

Thanks

Wray Sinclair

this is one of my go-to fly patterns. my favorite feature of this fly is its ability to appear as an emerger because the flash from the flashback appears as if the bug is emerging and its wings are coming out.

BH Flashback Pheasant Tail

Hook: sz. 12-22 nymph hook

Bead: copper 3/32 (or bead to fit hook)

Thread: 8/0 Brown

Tail: Pheasant Tail

Body: Pheasant Tail

Thorax: Peacock Herl

Back: Peacock Flashback

Rib: Small Copper Wire

Put hook in vise.

Take about 5 pheasant fibers from the pheasant tail. Tie the tips in leaving about 1 length of the hook behind. fold the rest the pheasant back and tie in.

Tie in copper wire for rib

Wrap the pheasant fibers up the shank of the hook 3/4 of the way. tie in

Wrap the rib up the shank of the hook around the pheasant

Tie in flashback infront of the pheasant. make sure the flashback faces the back of the hook.

Tie in peacock herl.

Wrap the peacock herl up to the bead and tie in.

Fold Flashback over and tie in. Whip finish and add a dab of head cement.

I like to fish this fly with no indicator because i believe they scare spooky fish but you can if you prefer to. put the indicator 1 and 1/2 the depth of the water. at the end of the drift lift your rod tip to make the emerger to appear as if it is emerging.

1.8.2010-Local DH

Where: Accotink Creek, VA Americana Ball Park

Date: 1/18/10

Conditions: 52 degrees J . 2mph NNW Wind. Clear Partly Cloudy Sky

Water Conditions: Running Slightly Muddy at 22 cfs

Flies: San Juan Worm, Egg, Kreelex, Mini Bugger

Days On The Water in 2010: 2

Report: Previous Day Accotink flowed at 400cfs from the rain. During the rain after Christmas Accotink had flowed at 2,000cfs and I suspect because of the hotlane project on the beltway washing so much junk downstream and really messing up the flows that the fish got washed out downstream. I talked to a friend who guides the area and they said to go upstream about the part the beltway crosses the river. I started fishing with a San Juan worm with an egg dropper. Fished a nice deep running pool with no success. Cut the dropper and fished with just the San Juan worm with no luck. Saw a large flat relatively still pool and switched to a mini bugger pattern that is really good on stocked trout. Still no success. Decided to leave because of no action so I switched to a kreelex to fish downstream with and had no luck. It was a great day to be on the water in this warm weather!

Soft Hackle

Soft Hackle

Thread: 8/0 Uni

Dubing: Golden Brown Ice Dub

Wing: Silver Phesant

Tie in thread. Keep  minimal thread near hook eye. important for later

Apply Dubbing: Put a small pinch of ice dub on thread and spin it on the thread IN ONLY ONE DIRECTION. Apply dubbing wax if prefered.

Take feather and strip the bottom bare. like in the picture

Tie in like in the picture.

Attach Hackle Plier to the tip of the feather. wrap around the hook shank 1 time. secure the material. tie off. whip finished. fly complete.

NOTE: fish fly as preferred. my favorite way to fish a soft hackle is to cast down and across the stream and let string across. use a pulse return if desired. Good pattern to use as an emerger. Match the color thread and feather to aquatic insect that you are trying to match. Enjoy!

Thread Midge

Thread Midge

Hook: 18-24 Nymph

Thread: Red

Weight: Small Gold Wire

Tie in at hook eye. wrap thread to back of the hook

Tie in Wire. Cover wire totally with thread

Wrap wire to front of the hook. this is to get the midge patter a little larger

Wrap wire back to the bend of the hook. This will also help get the fly down

Cover the led with your thread. make sure you can’t see any thread

Wrap the wire up the shank of the hook. Tie of and hook eye. Whip Finish. Apply Head Cement. The Fly is Finished.

NOTE: Some of the best midge fishing occurs in the winter and fish are often sluggish and feeding on or near the bottom. To get the fly down use a dropper rig with a attractor nymph above to help get this pattern down. Some good attractor nymphs that i like to use are BH Prince Nymphs,BH Zug Bugs, Weighted BH Czech Nymphs, BH Phesant Tail, BH, San Juan Worm, Valadi Worm. And any of your favorite nymph patterns in larger sizes with weight to help get this pap get this pattern on.
