Where: Wilson Creek, VA

Date: 3.28.10

Conditions: Overcast Sky. Around 45 degrees. Rain Around 12oclock.

Water Conditions: clear.

Working Flies: #18 BH Pheasant Tail, #14 Caddis Pupa

Days On The Water in 2010: 8

Report: Got to Wilson creek around 10:30. Rigged up a dry and dropper rig with a #12 Adams and a flashback pheasant tail. Got a small bait fish of some sort on it. Then landed a really small brookie. Both had huge scar marks on them. They were near a tree that’s trunks are all in the water so I guess a huge brown lives there! Most of the stream is general brookie water. Mostly riffles. Majority of my fish were in the tails of pools (if you could find a pool!) and in seams between two riffles. Noting else much happening so I switched to a #18 emerging midge with no luck but a tree! Switched to a #14 Caddis pupa and got 3 more fish on it. Right before the rain came I switched to a little attractor pattern I came up with and landed 1 brookie. Once the rain started I was able to bring one other brookie to hand. All brookies that a landed were small dinks so not much happening! Had to climb a really gnarly hill to get back out. Next time I am throwing a rope in my backpack to help me get up that hill! Got out around 12:15 and headed home =(

Days On The Water in 2010: 7

Report:

Wilson Creek- At around 8:30 arrived at Wilson creek for some brookie fishing. It was a cold morning with frost on the ground so everything was going slow. No visible hatch. Fished the seams from the native brookies. Had one brookie take the flash back pheasant tail. The brookie was about 7” so a decient brookie. Missed another brookie a little upstream 2 times. Fished the creek for about a half an hour before getting ready for a float trip.

Jackson River- Arrived at the river around 1:20ish. Rigged up and were in the water by 1:50ish. After 15min. Fished a tandem nymph rig with a #18 Emerging black midge and a #14 prince nymph and a yarn indicator. Nailed one nice brown trout near some submerged rocks around 8ft. A nice 15” wild brown that pulled the drag on the reel a few times. Really nice stuff to hear! A little while down the river I stuck another fish on some submerged wood but he got off! Switched to a Gummy stone a pattern developed by a local guide. Got 2 rainbow on it near the bank. One 8” and a 12”. Pulled out a 6wt. with a full sinking rio multi tip and a prototype jointed streamer! Moved many fish with the fly. Just few fish hit it. Many nice follows with strikes but not to many hookups. Saw two 20” chase it but no takes. Finally got a 16” from chucking it to the bank. Chucked it the rest of the day with more follows but no hookups.

We got our spot in this 2-fly tournament at rose river farms in va…. Well todays weather pattern was very wacky…one second it was raining and then the next it was sunny and then it was a down pour.. Started out pretty good.. on my 3rd cast a had a hookup on a 15″ fish that we used as one of our three to measureDSCN3223…good start to the day…

We had decied to not measure several 15″ fish because we had seen better fish in the pool…. well when it gets near the time to quit to stay with our game plan we needed to measure 1 more fish. (the plan was to measure 2 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon b/c it looked like crap) Finally hook a 12″ fish on my kreelex

DSCN3225

The water was so low that there was no flow so i was stripping a pink nymph and getting plenty of hookups…. After two hours of fishing our AM beat we had lunch and then went to our next two hours of our PM beat within the 2nd cast of the PM session I hook into a 16″ fish that we decide to measure as our final fish.

After that i land a 17″ which it was to late to measure it =( and we landed some other 15″ fish. It was a great tournament and we ended up with 65pts. measured a 15″-12″-16″ as our three fish to measure. We totaled 9 fish. We came out on 5th place with only a few inches separating 4th from 3rd… 1st place team had 99pts with a total of 18 fish. It was really fun to be able to fish in the tournament with the guy who taught me to fly fish  and we both caught good #s of fish. My two flies were a kreelex and a pink nymph…. the water was very low and the fish were semi spooky..

Go Skunked at the gunpowder today… Well i got my wish for rain… 3+ days of it….. normally the gunpowder runs at 30-130cfs… it was running about 400cfs hooked one fish on a green weenie but he got off. Fish seemed to be away from the main current in the back eddies and such… Fished lots of streamers.

Well I decided to fish the gunpowder again! It was not looking to be a good day with a cold front coming through and then they released water and it went from 30 cfs to about 150 cfs. And there was rain in the forecast.  It turned out to be a great day a friend and myself totaled about 18-20 fish total in about 9 hours of fishing.  We started out the morning at about 9:30 and i was fishing a long riffle that was about 2 feet deep. I used all types of nymphs and streamers and could not get anything. Then i went downstream some to where the riffle opened into a pool that was pretty deep. There were several rocks in the pool that i knew there had to be trout stacked up on. I fished it with several nymphs but no takes so i tied on a green weenie and started getting hookups immediately. Got a few 8″ and a 10″After i caught a few from the pool they would not bite anymore so i moved on downstream with no luck. After lunch we went downstream some more and a fished a beautiful picture perfect pool with some streamers (slump busters, sculpins) with no luck so i tried some nymphs (caddis larva, caddis pupa, BH prince nymph, pheasant tail, etc.) with still no luck so i tried the green weenie with no luck. Figured some canoes spooked the fish in the pool. fished the riffles below it and hooked into 2 decent brown trout 8″ but both came off.  Fished some more riffles that people before us had fished with no luck. Came to a log jamDSCN3170

I switched to a slump buster streamer and fished through here and had one take from a nice brown trout about 12″ was my guess but no hookup. Switched to a sculpin with still no luck so I went downstream from the logjam and found this picture perfect runDSCN3169

I fished it with some nymphs with no luck!?!?!? but tied on the greenie weenie and got some really nice fish out of it. First drift through i was watching the leader and all the sudden it stops moving so i set the hook and pull this nice fish outDSCN3172DSCN3174

landed several other fish in here on the green weenie.DSCN3177

At about 4oclock we went to another location on the gunpowder. We got there at about 4:30 and managed a few rises but no takes to some sz. 18 green and brown elk hair caddis by 5:00 it started to rain and I switched to a sz. 18 parachute blue winged olive.  got this fish out of a small run with the bwo parachuteDSCN3181

It started to rain more and more and the fish started to turn off so at about 6:30 we called it quits. It was a great day and i tried out the new rod and reel which are so sweet.DSCN3171
