Days On The Water in 2010: 10

Report: Got on the water around 1:00. Started out with a #16 Quill Gordan assuming there would be a small hatch of quill gordans. Managed a really small brownie that was like 3” on the Quill Gordan. Switched to a #14 Pheasant Tail emerger. Landed one really nice brownie about 8” on it. Not to much more action while I was heading upstream so I added a dropper to the fly with a BWO Nymph. Managed a few brown trout on that. Had one nice brownie take the dropper but did not get a hookset. Lost my last PT Emerger so I tied on a #18 Black Stonefly Dry because I have seen several stoneflies that day on the banks and trees. Added the BWO Nymph on the Stonefly. Decided to go back downstream and saw a really nice riffle and lost a nice brookie as he was coming to hand. Lost the dropper so I tied on a #18 Flash Back Pheasant Tail and landed a small brookie. Went further downstream to near the bridge where the highway crosses the stream but nothing there. Fished my way back up to where I started and tied on a #16 Parachute adams and had a few rises for it and landed one of them. Got up to posted water and had to turn back so I fished a #16 Mr. Rapidan on my way back down and managed one rise on it.

Go Skunked at the gunpowder today… Well i got my wish for rain… 3+ days of it….. normally the gunpowder runs at 30-130cfs… it was running about 400cfs hooked one fish on a green weenie but he got off. Fish seemed to be away from the main current in the back eddies and such… Fished lots of streamers.

Well I decided to fish the gunpowder again! It was not looking to be a good day with a cold front coming through and then they released water and it went from 30 cfs to about 150 cfs. And there was rain in the forecast.  It turned out to be a great day a friend and myself totaled about 18-20 fish total in about 9 hours of fishing.  We started out the morning at about 9:30 and i was fishing a long riffle that was about 2 feet deep. I used all types of nymphs and streamers and could not get anything. Then i went downstream some to where the riffle opened into a pool that was pretty deep. There were several rocks in the pool that i knew there had to be trout stacked up on. I fished it with several nymphs but no takes so i tied on a green weenie and started getting hookups immediately. Got a few 8″ and a 10″After i caught a few from the pool they would not bite anymore so i moved on downstream with no luck. After lunch we went downstream some more and a fished a beautiful picture perfect pool with some streamers (slump busters, sculpins) with no luck so i tried some nymphs (caddis larva, caddis pupa, BH prince nymph, pheasant tail, etc.) with still no luck so i tried the green weenie with no luck. Figured some canoes spooked the fish in the pool. fished the riffles below it and hooked into 2 decent brown trout 8″ but both came off.  Fished some more riffles that people before us had fished with no luck. Came to a log jamDSCN3170

I switched to a slump buster streamer and fished through here and had one take from a nice brown trout about 12″ was my guess but no hookup. Switched to a sculpin with still no luck so I went downstream from the logjam and found this picture perfect runDSCN3169

I fished it with some nymphs with no luck!?!?!? but tied on the greenie weenie and got some really nice fish out of it. First drift through i was watching the leader and all the sudden it stops moving so i set the hook and pull this nice fish outDSCN3172DSCN3174

landed several other fish in here on the green weenie.DSCN3177

At about 4oclock we went to another location on the gunpowder. We got there at about 4:30 and managed a few rises but no takes to some sz. 18 green and brown elk hair caddis by 5:00 it started to rain and I switched to a sz. 18 parachute blue winged olive.  got this fish out of a small run with the bwo parachuteDSCN3181

It started to rain more and more and the fish started to turn off so at about 6:30 we called it quits. It was a great day and i tried out the new rod and reel which are so sweet.DSCN3171

A few days ago after seeing a concert and getting home at 11:30 pm i had to get ready to go fish the gunpowders trico hatch the next day. Getting up at 5:30 and heading off on our hour and a half drive to the Gunpowder River. Arriving at 7:45 ready to fish I just watched the stream looking for signs of the Hatch. There were no rises until about 8:15 when i finally found the right trico pattern I landed a small brown trout about 6″. Most of the Brown trout seemed to be in pods because of the extremely low water.

I was fishing a small flat. There was a fallen log under water that made a little riffle where some rainbows were stacked up. Landed a few rainbows there. The Trico hatch ended at about 11:30. Managed to land a big sucker on a BH Hairs Ear. Later in the day I was able to land a few fish on a Beetle Pattern. The fishing was ok but it was very tough because of the low water. It was essential to be stealthy and stay behind the fish. The fish were in pods and when you spooked one of the fish you spooked the whole pod.
